Why your website isn't showing on Google and what to check

Not appearing at all, ranking below competitors and missing from the map results are different problems. Finding out which one you have is the useful first step.

You type your service and your town into Google. A competitor appears. Another appears. You keep looking, and your own business is nowhere you can see.

Before you decide your website needs replacing, separate three questions: does Google know the page exists, does it consider the page relevant to that search, and are you expecting a website result or a map listing?

Finding the right cause gives you a useful next step: getting a page into Google's index, making an existing service page more relevant, or improving your local listing. Each calls for different work.

First check the actual page

Open Google Search Console for your website and use URL Inspection on the page you expected to appear. If you're unsure who controls Search Console, ask your developer to help you establish access under an account your business owns.

Google's URL Inspection guidance explains the difference between the indexed information and a live test. A successful live test is not proof that the page is indexed, and an indexed page is not guaranteed to appear for your chosen search.

If the page isn't indexed, look at the reported reason. A page deliberately excluded from search, a broken address and a duplicate of another page need different responses. Don't treat every excluded URL as an error: you wouldn't want every private account page appearing in results.

Ask for a plain explanation of the finding and what it means for that particular URL. We wouldn't recommend rebuilding your website on the strength of one missing result. A specific diagnosis lets you improve the part that needs attention.

Google knows it exists, but customers still can't find it

Now inspect what the page actually offers. Does it clearly describe the service you searched for? Can a customer see where you work? Does it explain something useful beyond the fact that you're available?

If your only mention of boiler servicing is one sentence on a general plumbing page, your site gives that search very little attention. You may need a proper service page, not six more blog articles containing the same phrase.

Use Search Console's performance report to look at the queries and pages receiving impressions. Separate your business name from searches by people who don't know you yet. Our guide to a useful monthly website report explains that distinction.

A low position doesn't tell you the cause on its own. Compare the actual search results, your page's usefulness and the changes made over time. One screenshot isn't a trend.

For local searches, check the map separately

If you mean the local map results, check your Google Business Profile as well as your website. Are your details accurate, your service described properly and your profile verified where required?

Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance and how well known a business is. Publishing a page with a town name doesn't move your business closer to every searcher.

You can serve customers across South Wales without pretending you have an office in every town. Describe your actual coverage and show relevant work where you have permission to share it.

Fix the cause, then give it a fair check

After a meaningful correction, you can request indexing for an eligible page. Google makes clear that requesting a crawl doesn't guarantee inclusion. Repeated requests aren't a substitute for fixing the problem.

Keep a dated record of what changed, which page it affected and what you'll check next. You can then judge progress without changing everything again after a disappointing afternoon.

Our search optimisation and AI visibility service starts with evidence like this. If you're unsure what your results are telling you, send us the page and the search you're trying.
